In the United States, when a man or women turn eighteen they are considered an adult. Being eighteen, they are not acknowledged as teenagers anymore. They have more freedom and more opportunities to become independent. Some of the opportunities an eighteen years old are given are the right to vote, open bank accounts, lease their own apartment or join the military. They have equal opportunities like adults over the age of twenty-one. However, anyone between the age of eighteen through twenty are not allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages or attend bars because they are considered underage. Anyone between the age of eighteen and twenty should not be denied the right purchase alcoholic beverage. They are mature and well aware of the consequences alcohol leads to. Allowing the legal drinking age to lower to eighteen, it will decrease unsafe drinking activities, decrease misdemeanors, and also decrease the percentage of drunk driving accidents. People are considered adults by the time they are eighteen they should have the equal right as any other adults, despite of their age. Sallust and Plutarch, while coming from different worlds and living different lives werevery much alike in the thoughts that they presented in their writing on the fall of theRoman Republic. Sallust was an active individual in Roman politics during the Republicsdecline. He was a tribune in 52 BC who was kicked out of the Senate amid allegations ofimmorality. In 49 BC Sallust was in command of one of Julius Caesars legions and waselected to Praetor in 47 BC. Taking part in the African Campaign earned him thegovernorship of Numidia in. Upon his return to Rome in the early 40s BC however he wascharged with extortion, only to be released by Caesar. At this point in his life he decidedto become a writer of history and lived a quiet life doing that. Plutarchs life was verymuch different form Sallusts. In the following essay I will show examples of howSallust and Plutarch point out again and again the lack of morality in the characters aboutwhom they write in reference to the decline of the Roman Republic. Sallust begins his Bellum Catalinae by telling us how the Roman Republic was built. Heshows us that the people put aside their differences and kept their common goal, peace, inmind. According to the version I have heard, in the beginning the Trojans who were wanderingin exile without a fixed home under the leadership of Aeneas founded and controlled the cityof Rome as a free and independent Republic along with the indigenous people, A primitivetribe of men without laws or organized government. It is remarkable how easily these twopeoples united after they had been gathered together in one community in the light of theirdifferences in race and in language and the disparity in the way in which each of themlived: in a short time a diverse and nomadic mass of people was transformed by harmony intoa Republic. Later after the Republic had grown in population, institutions and territoryand seemed to be sufficient in prosperity and strength then, as happens in most humanaffairs, envy grew ou t of success.1Clearly Sallust is setting up some contrast from what was good and right to what will becomethe Republics demise. It is clear that both Sallust and Plutarch holdthe view that good old-fashioned morality is a good thing. In their writings they portraythe founders of The Republic as possessing this morality. It was the pietas, virtus,clementia, and iustitia that the founders of the Republic possessed that built the respublica against all odds. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is a comedy combining elements of love, fairies, magic, and dreams. He woos her with his sword. Hermia is in love with Lysander. Egeus, Hermia's father, forbids the relationship with Lysander and orders her to marry Demetrius. Demetrius loves Hermia, but she does not love him. On the other hand, Helena is in love with Demetrius. To settle the confusion, Theseus decides that Hermia must marry Demetrius or become a nun. Oberon's plan is carried out, but the potion is also placed on Lysander's eyes. Lysander awakes to see Helena, who is aimlessly walking through the woods, and instantly falls in love with her. She thinks that he is making fun of her being in love with Demetrius, so she leaves and Lysander follows. This leaves Hermia to wake up alone. Puck now has journeyed to the area where several actors are rehearsing. He uses his magic to turn one of them into a donkey, in hopes that Titania will awake to see it. Just as planned, she awakes and falls in love with the donkey. Oberon and Puck overhear Demetrius and Hermia arguing about their relationships and realize that they had made a mistake. However, over the course of the last half century, television has grown drastically in its influence, and what programming is about. The programs of yesteryear promoted family values, loyalty, and love. Today’s programs promote promiscuous sex, violence, and cheating to get your way. Not that television is totally to blame, but, it has certainly played the largest role of any medium in what our society considers deviance, and normalcy.
